How do I add my child’s computer?

Sign in to DTEX Family, choose Computers, then Add a computer. It shows a 6-digit family code. On your child’s computer, open the Download page, install DTEX Family and type the code when it asks.

The set-up guides below show each step for Windows, a Mac and Linux.

Where do I find the family code?

Sign in, choose Computers, then Add a computer. The 6-digit code is on that screen. It works once, for a few minutes. If it runs out, close the window and get a new one.

What does my child see on their computer?

The first time DTEX Family runs, your child sees a short notice that explains what it does, in words for their age. The DTEX Family shield sits by the clock (in the menu bar on a Mac). Teenagers can open What my parent can see from it at any time.

If what DTEX Family does changes, for example when you turn pictures on, they see the notice again. DTEX Family never records keystrokes or directly reads file contents, and never uses the camera or microphone.

How do I turn pictures of the screen on or off?

Choose Recording, then use the Record screenshots switch and choose Save. Nothing changes until you save. Your child sees an updated notice on their computer when you turn pictures on or off.

Pictures are never taken on a parent’s account, or while the computer is idle, locked or paused. On a Mac, pictures need macOS 14 or later.

How long are pictures kept?

Pictures and the text read from them are kept for 7, 14 or 30 days. You choose under Recording, Keep pictures for. Apps and window names are kept for up to 12 months. When the time is up they are deleted.

How do I answer a request from my child?

When your child asks for more time, a website or an app, it appears under Notifications with their reason. Choose Say yes (for more time you choose how many minutes) or Not now, and add a note for your child if you like. They see your answer.

Your child can ask from Windows and Linux computers today. Asking is on the way for the Mac.

What do urgent, important and info notifications mean?

DTEX AI marks each notification urgent, important or for your information. Urgent ones are shown first. Each one describes what appeared on the screen, such as someone asking for photos or to keep a secret. It never labels your child.

Open a notification to see the moment, then mark it as looked at, or as not concerning. DTEX AI is off until you agree to it, and only looks at activity recorded after that.

How do I invite a co-parent?

Choose Family, then Invite a co-parent, and make the invitation. DTEX Family doesn’t send email yet, so you copy the one-time link and send it to them yourself. They choose a password and join the family.

You choose whether they can change the family’s settings (Can manage the family) or only see and answer. A family can have one co-parent.

Two children share one computer account. What do I do?

Choose Computers, open the computer, and find the account. Under Who uses it, choose Shared account and pick the children who share it. When someone signs in or unlocks, the computer asks Who’s using the computer?, so each child’s day stays separate.

You need at least two people added to your family to share an account.

What is the parent code, and where do I find it?

The parent code is on Computers, once you have added a computer, under Parent code. It is hidden until you choose Show the code. You type it on a child’s computer to open Parent options, where you can pause DTEX Family or uninstall it.

How do I pause or remove DTEX Family on a computer?

On the child’s computer, open DTEX Family from the shield, choose Parent options and type your parent code. From there you can pause DTEX Family or choose Uninstall, which asks you to confirm with Yes or Cancel.

Pausing or uninstalling asks for your parent code.

I forgot my password

On the sign-in page choose Forgot your password? and enter your email address. A reset link works for an hour.

During early access DTEX Family can’t send email yet, so the link won’t arrive in your inbox. Contact us and tell us the email address you signed up with.
