Apple silicon, macOS 13 or laterYou’ll need the Mac’s administrator password
Do this on your child’s computer. Keep your phone handy: you’ll read the family code from it.

Steps

  1. Get your family code

On your phone or computer, sign in to DTEX Family, open Computers and choose Add a computer. Keep the 6-digit code on screen. It works once, for a few minutes.

  2. Open the download page on your child’s computer

In a web browser on your child’s computer, go to family.dtexsystem.com/download. It picks the right installer for that computer. Choose Download for Mac.

  3. Open the package

Open the file you downloaded. macOS may say it can’t check the package, because DTEX Family doesn’t have Apple’s approval yet. If it does, open System Settings, choose Privacy & Security, and choose Open Anyway next to the file. Then enter this Mac’s administrator password.

  4. Type the family code

Click the DTEX Family icon in the menu bar, choose Set up this Mac, and type the 6 digits.

  5. Choose who uses each account

Back on your phone or computer, the Mac appears under Computers. For each Mac account choose which child uses it, mark it as a parent’s own account, or mark it as shared.

  6. Allow pictures, if you use them

Pictures of the screen are optional. If you turn them on, allow Screen Recording for DTEX Family in System Settings, under Privacy & Security. Pictures need macOS 14 or later; on macOS 13 the Mac records apps and window names only.

  7. Your child sees the notice

The next time your child uses the Mac, a short notice explains what DTEX Family does, and the shield appears in the menu bar.

That’s it. You’ll start seeing your child’s day in DTEX Family shortly.

If something goes wrong

macOS won’t open the package. Choose Open Anyway in System Settings, under Privacy & Security, as in the third step.

The code doesn’t work. Each code works once, for a few minutes. Open Add a computer again for a new one.

My child can’t ask me for things from the Mac. Ask a parent works on Windows and Linux today. It is on the way for the Mac.
